From the Maximilian Foulkes collection of exceptional vintage objects, this late Victorian cigar ashtray is crafted from sterling silver and inset with an original George III Cartwheel Penny.
The ashtray bears London hallmarks dating it to 1897, along with the maker’s mark A.B & Sns for the renowned luxury retailer and silversmith Andrew Barrett & Sons. The underside is further stamped A Barrett & Sons, 63-64 Piccadilly.
At its center sits a British Cartwheel Penny dating to 1797, a distinctive oversized copper coin issued during the reign of King George III and minted by Matthew Boulton at the Soho Mint. A century separates the coin from the silverwork surrounding it, giving the piece an especially interesting connection to two periods of British history.
Beautifully proportioned and rich in character, this antique ashtray is a distinctive piece of English silver that serves equally well as a functional smoking accessory or collectible decorative object.
